About the opera

"The Square of a Circle" is the title of the opera composed by Orestis Bazos, who is also the writer of the libretto.

The play is set in the present time. It takes place in an appartment in Athens, a typical urban setting. The story examines the conflicts derived from the political disagreements between the leftism and the rightism in their most extreme versions. The roles of political opponents involve persons of family ties: two siblings (the baritone Marinos Tarnanas and the tenor Thanos Zissis). Also the girlfriends of the two siblings have the leading roles (soprano Vivi Sykiotis and mezzo soprano Maria Bazou). Due the circumstances, the siblings are forced to overcome their political differences. They either have to stick to them, or come face to face with death.

The opera was funded by the Municipality of Kallithea, directed by Giorgos Galantis and Giannis Dritsa, with the participation of the actress Fresis Mahaira, as well as the Children's and Adolescent Choir, the Mixed Choir of the Municipality of Kallithea and the Synchordia Orchestra.

The composer and conductor Orestis Bazos has been for many years the artistic director of the Municipal Conservatory of Kallithea "Odysseas Dimitriadis", one of the largest conservatories with a presence in the cultural events of the city since 1995. He created and directs in recent years the Chamber Orchestra "Synchordia" (which consists mainly of musicians who teach at the Conservatory), the Children's and Adolescent Choir of the Municipality of Kallithea and during the past five years he also directs the Mixed Choir of the Municipality of Kallithea.

The premiere of the opera "The Square of a Circle" took place on May 6, 2018, at the Kallithea City Theater.
